Why I Started Mint Mates

I've always been drawn to young people. My friends joke that I can't go for a coffee or walk down the street without ending up in a conversation with one. For the longest time, I didn't realise it was a gift, I just thought I was chatty. But the truth is, I've always been able to see things through their lens. To really hear them. And that's where Mint Mates started, long before it had a name.

School wasn't my thing but that taught me everything.

I'm the youngest of four girls. My eldest sister was the brainiac school captain, the works. But Mum & Dad never compared us. They built our confidence in whatever we were each good at, and then helped us transfer those strengths into other areas of life. That stuck with me more than any lesson in a classroom ever did.

I struggled in school when I was not engaged and thrived with top marks when I was. But I had other skills ones that didn't show up on a report card. I'm grateful my parents recognised that, even when they were getting calls from teachers and the Principal. Because it was those exact skills the ones no one could grade that saw me move to Sydney by myself at 21, to Hong Kong at 24, and into a career that's taken me around the world.

I want young people and their parents to see that there is value in so many parts of your story not just your grades. Don't get me wrong, good grades are great and I love to hi 5 these results, but they don't guarantee happiness or success.

New York changed everything.

In 2016, I was living in New York. I kept stopping to talk to young homeless people on the street who were going through it, really going through it. I couldn't work out what came first: the mental ill-health or the substance dependencies. So I went and studied it. I enrolled in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselling and caught the subway to the Bronx every week. I was the odd one out in that classroom, which I am grateful for to feel and see that insight. What I learned from my classmates and my Professor who ran a methadone clinic in the city will stay with me for life.

That experience confirmed what I already felt deep down: I was going to pursue my dream of supporting young people.

The blend is what makes this different.

The blend is what makes this different.

With over 15 years across mentoring, mental health, corporate training, HR, and recruitment in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and New York I bring a perspective that doesn't come from a textbook. I blend old-fashioned values and business etiquette (I'm not old, but my clients might disagree 😄) with the realities of navigating life in this day and age. I think there's a place for both and honestly, it fills my cup.

I practise what I preach.

I role model being honest and authentic even when it's uncomfortable. I share real examples of times I've reflected on how I reacted to things, actions I've taken, and how I managed them. I think it's actually cool to be able to do that, even when you might be embarrassed about how you handled something. We're not all perfect. No one is.

But I think what shines through is how much love I have for myself, my family, my friends, and the young people I work with. By doing the work and not hiding behind your fears, you can lead a pretty awesome life one where your definition of success is met.

That's what Mint Mates is about. That's what I want for every young person who walks through my door.

What I Bring to Every Session

Real talk — I say the things other people won't. Kindly, but honestly. No fluff.

Uncovering hidden strengths — I find the gold in you that you might not see yet.

Creating "aha" moments — blending mental health insights with real-world experience to shift how you think.

Making you laugh — because growth doesn't have to be heavy. Sometimes the best breakthroughs happen when you're comfortable enough to be yourself.

Storytelling that sticks — I teach through relatable stories blended with what's in textbooks.

Motivating you to get uncomfortable — because that's where the real growth lives.

Finding sparks of joy — the ones you might have missed or forgotten about.

The Experience Behind the Mentoring

I don't fit neatly into one box, and that's the point. My background is a blend of everything I've lived, learned, and worked through:

🧠 Formal training in mental health and wellbeing, with hands-on experience working with leading Australian youth mental health organisations including Headspace, Yalari, and Batyr

🌏 15+ years across corporate training, operations, client services, HR, recruitment & executive search

✈️ International experience, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and New York, working across cultures and industries

📋 Certified in Training & Assessment, I know how to facilitate real learning, not just talk at people

🤝 I collaborate with other practitioners to make sure every young person gets the best possible support

This isn't a typical mentoring background. It's a hybrid of real-world business experience, mental health know-how, and a deep understanding of what young people actually need to move forward.

My Approach

There's no one-size-fits-all here. I work with each young person in a way that feels real to them matching their pace, their learning style, and where they're at right now.

The OWN Framework:

Open

Learn your story.
Get real about what's shaped you, your wins and struggles, and what matters to you.

Work

Build your story.
Rewire limiting beliefs, grow real confidence, and discover your strengths.

Navigate

Live your new story.
Turn growth into action, find your direction, and start moving forward.

What a session feels like:

Welcoming, non-judgmental, and safe

Practical, you leave with something you can actually use

Real, I share my own experiences and others' journeys when it helps

Tailored, your session, your pace, your goals

Available: In person (Brisbane) or via Zoom (anywhere in Australia/Asia Pacific)

Is Mint Mates for You?

I work with young people aged 16–25 who might be:

Feeling stuck, lost, or overwhelmed

Struggling with self-doubt, anxiety, or comparison mode

Unsure about uni, career direction, or what they even want

 Lacking confidence or motivation

 Overthinking, procrastinating, or people-pleasing

Wanting to understand themselves better and take real steps forward

Whether you're a high school student, at uni, fresh in the workforce, or still figuring it out if you're ready to stop pretending and start growing, you're in the right place.

Yas, 22, Sydney

"Jules has helped me in ways I didn't think possible. I was so reluctant to go as I thought I should be able to sort it out myself, but I'm so glad I did... 2 months later, I can't believe I can feel this way — I am back feeling good about myself. She just makes you feel good about yourself and helps you realise that everything you are going through is normal, but taught me some things I didn't know about myself... calls you on it in a supportive way that makes you want to do the work. So grateful."

Emma, 24, Brisbane

"Working with Jules has honestly been a turning point for me. I almost didn’t reach out because I thought I should be able to figure things out on my own, but I’m so glad I did. Just a couple of months later, I feel like a completely different person — more confident, calmer, and actually excited about where I’m heading. Jules has this way of making you feel really seen and understood, while also gently challenging you to step up and do the work. I’ve learnt so much about myself and the way I think. I’m incredibly grateful for the support."

The Bigger Picture

At Mint Mates, the mission is simple:

Ignite the fire in young people to invest in their personal and professional growth — and write their own story.

I believe young people shouldn't have to feel broken or behind to deserve support. You don't need to be in crisis to want clarity, confidence, and direction.

I want to build a community of young people who don't just overcome life's challenges — but thrive through them.

Your story is uniquely yours. And every setback, strength, and success shapes who you're becoming.

Let's make sure it's a story you're proud of. 💚
